Young athletes proved there may be some truth in the concept of beginners’ luck as they celebrated reaching the finals of a competitive tournament – despite only playing the sport twice before.

The tag rugby team for Northbury Primary School finished second at the Barking Rugby Club contest in Gale Street on Monday.

The seven to nine-year-old boys pipped 18 other teams to the post to nab their silver medals for the tag rugby tournament. The sport is a non-tackle, minimal contact version of rugby, where the two teams try to accumulate the most points by full-time by scoring trys.

John McGuire, sports coach at the school in Northbury Close, Barking, praised their performance.

“This is the first ever tournament for tag rugby in this age group and coming second says it all,” he said.

“The team only had two practice sessions, so it’s looking good for future events this term.”
