A campaign calling for a public inquiry into the safety of a busy stretch of road has been launched after a biker died yesterday.
Dagenham and Rainham MP Jon Cruddas and Eastbrook ward councillors Mick McCarthy and Tony Ramsay plan to speak to residents living in and around Dagenham Road following the death of Derek “Del Boy” Gomes.
Emergency services were called to near the Eastbrook pub at 4.15pm and found Mr Gomes, who was in his twenties, unresponsive.
Campaigners hope that speed bumps could be installed either side of Eastbrook Comprehensive, with Cllr Ramsay saying many residents had raised concerns about the road over the past year.
“I think it is time the council took a serious look at this patch which is right outside a school,” he added. “In the coming weeks I will be liaising with local residents to address the growing concern.”
Cllr Mick McCarthy, who is also a governor at Eastbrook Comprehensive, said there was an “increasing risk to schoolchildren arriving and leaving” and he would be campaigning for better safety measures.
Mr Cruddas also lent his support, adding that the road needs “serious attention from the council”.
Former council leader and local resident Charlie Fairbrass MBE was knocked down and hospitalised after being knocked down by a car in October 2015.
