Members of the British Legion enjoyed tea and birthday cake last Wednesday, as its chairwoman celebrated her 90th birthday.
Kit Munson joined the British Legion after moving to Dagenham to look after her mother.
She said: “I didn’t know anyone in Dagenham, and it was only when my husband came home from the British Legion one day to tell me that there were groups of women volunteering there that I decided to try it out.”
She continued: “I went along, reluctantly, but I met so many friendly people. It’s a very sociable place, and they’re all very supportive.”
Kit has been chairwoman for the legion, in Rectory Road, Dagenham, for more than 30 years.
She helps organise meetings, jumble sales and raffles, donating the money they raise to the Poppy Appeal.
Her daughter, Kathleen Harriss said: “She really does enjoy it and it is something she loves to do.”
When asked if Kit plans to continue acting as chairwoman, Kathleen explained: “I think it is likely that she will carry on, as it is something she thoroughly enjoys doing.”
