A DAGENHAM based charity, which aims to help the isolated elderly, is in desperate need of volunteers to save it from closure.

Contact the Elderly, which has 270 groups throughout the UK, is based on the idea of people with a little spare time taking a group of elderly people for Sunday tea once a month.

Sadly, the Dagenham branch of the charity will be forced to close if they cannot replace their co-ordinator, who has left to help the poor in Vietnam.

Janice Telfer, the Regional Development Officer, said: "No-one has offered to organise the group so we're really struggling to continue helping the local frail and elderly people who so enjoy their monthly outings."

It is the job of the co-ordinator to ensure that everyone knows what they are meant to be doing and to welcome new elderly members and volunteers into the group.

Janice said: "You only need a phone, a little time every month, as well as an empathy with lonely, elderly people of course."

The group is also badly in need of drivers with access to a private car.

Drivers take the elderly to their Sunday afternoon tea once a month, and join in the meal with them.

"The afternoons are full of laughter." Janice said.

"I think the volunteers enjoy going for tea as much as the guests."

If you can help drive the elderly or host a tea please call (0800)716543.
