MONSTERS, dragons and trains came alive at a Barking primary school when a popular children's author paid a visit.
Denis Bond, who has written more than 70 books for children, was invited to Manor Infant School, in Sandringham Road to help celebrate Book Week.
As well captivating the children through his story telling, Denis also explained how a book is made, from initial ideas through to illustration and publishing.
It was then time for the children to show Denis their own stories, which they had penned in preparation for his visit.
Manor Infant's Literacy co-ordinator Catherine Thatcher said: "The children responded very enthusiastically towards Denis' books, particularly the boys, who enjoyed his various themes such as monsters, dragons and trains.
"And they were mesmerised by the book making process which he showed them."
As part of Book Week the pupils also took part in a Book Exchange, where kids take in their favourite book, tell class mates why they love it and then exchange it with a friend.
The school hopes Book Week will encourage youngsters to see reading as fun, not just a curricular activity.
