A STATE of the art children's centre has been ranked as one of the top ten new public buildings in the UK, but just missed out on the top prize.

John Perry Children's Centre in Auriel Avenue, Dagenham, got down to the last ten in the prestigious SCALA Civic Building of the Year Award, but did not make the final choice selected recently.

It is also one of 60 buildings to feature in the SCALA yearbook, which received applications from 160 projects.

The centre opened in March 2006 and offers a range of services for parents and their children.
