DESPITE a public outcry from residents, two of the borough's post offices are doomed to close.

In a report released by Royal Mail today it was announced that branches in Bennett's Castle Lane and Broad Street, both in Dagenham, will face closure this summer.

The decision comes after a six-week consultation period, during which the Post Office claims to have taken into account the needs of elderly residents, and concerns about the capability of other branches to absorb the extra customers.

The POST previously highlighted the strain that would be put on the already busy branch in Heathway if the unit in Broad Street were to close.

Despite these issues, and opposition from local MPs, Royal Mail has announced that the closures will begin in June, although precise dates have yet to be set for individual branches.

A total of 155 branches are due to be shut down across London.

However, six have been granted a stay of execution as further reviews are made and seven have been spared the chop altogether.
