A HAIRDRESSER has defied the credit crunch and realised her life long dream of running her own salon.
Mum-of-three Carla Landers decided that despite the economic downturn she would set up shop in Becontree Avenue, Dagenham.
"I was terrified at first because so many small businesses are failing", she said.
"But in the end I just decided to go for it because it's what I have wanted to do since I was at school."
Carla, 28, trained as a hairdresser at Redbridge College but took time out of her career when she had her three sons, Charlie, Harry and Harvey.
Three years ago she decided to return to college and finish her training and since then she has not looked back.
After working in a salon Carla decided to realise her dream to own her own business and started Glamorous Unisex hair salon.
Carla said: "I have only been open for a couple of weeks but I already have a few regulars. Several people have picked up my 20 per cent off flyer that I handed out at schools and put through letter boxes.
"The offer ends at the end of March but I think it's a great thing to do in these cash-strapped times.
"Getting your hair done can be a bit of a luxury for some people so getting it that bit cheaper is great."
The fantastic response Carla has received from clients and the community has inspired her to enter the Barking and Dagenham Business Awards, supported by The POST.
She will be putting Glamorous salon forward for the Best New Business category.
Entries to the borough Business Awards would also be eligible to enter the Thames Gateway Business Awards, sponsored by Archant.
The closing date is May 1, call 020 227 3319 for an application form or visit www.bdpost.co.uk
