Police arrested two teenagers on Saturday after a high-speed car chase in Dagenham.

The vehicle, a black Mercedes, sped through traffic lights and down residential roads after reportedly failing to stop for officers at about 6pm.

Supported by a police helicopter, officers from the Met’s East Area Command Unit pursued the vehicle until the Marston Avenue junction with Trefgarne Road, where the occupants got out and fled.

Two 16-year-olds, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were arrested nearby, one for aggravated taking and driving away (TDA)

driving with no insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a driving licence; the other allowing himself to be carried in a vehicle taken without consent and cannabis possession.

They were taken to an east London police station and later released under investigation.

Road closures were in place while the vehicle was recovered.

Enquiries continue.
