This smelly, eyesore front garden in Dagenham has ended up costing its owner £795.

Barking and Dagenham Council issued Charles Headley with a warning letter following complaints from his fed up neighbours about black bags filled with smelly waste and a pile of wood in the front of his home.

However he ignored the council and left the eyesore in Chaplin Road to fester forcing the council to issue him with a legal order to clean it up in 21 days.

He ignored that too so was summoned to Barkingside Magistrates Court.

Undeterred he failed to show up but was fined £220, ordered to pay £545 costs to the council and a £30 victim surcharge in his absence.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, cabinet member for enforcement and community safety said: “This is another great example of our determination to clamp down on eyesore gardens across Barking and Dagenham.

“They are a nuisance to residents living in the same neighbourhood. We welcome people who identify anyone who refuses to act in a manner that is socially responsible.”
