Domestic violence is the third most common crime in Barking and Dagenham, police have revealed.
Statistically it is only beaten by residential burglary and motor vehicle crime.
Since April 1 last year police have responded to 1,364 reports of domestic abuse in the borough.
These figures show a seven per cent reduction on the previous year but officers say there is still more that can be done to reduce the number of people who are victimised by partners or family members.
DI Tony Kirk from the Barking and Dagenham Police community safety unit said: “There is no place in Barking and Dagenham for domestic violence.
“It is a cruel and cowardly crime. My team are specially trained to intervene in violent domestic situations and to defend those who cannot defend themselves.”
He urged victims to contact police, but said third parties, such as family members and neighbours who overhear or witness violent exchanges should also get in touch.
