The Diocese of Chelmsford has appointed John Ball as chief executive and Diocesan secretary.
He is currently head of strategy and asset management with London Underground.
Mr Ball will take on the leadership of the Church of England in Essex and East London on May 3.
Welcoming the appointment, the Bishop of Chelmsford, The Right Reverend Stephen Cottrell, said: “He is a person of great energy and vision and brings with him much experience in strategy and business planning.”
Mr Ball added: “I am delighted to be taking on this role at an exciting time.”
