Thousands of police officers will be deployed onto London’s streets to keep revellers safe tonight.

The Met urged Barking and Dagenham partygoers to keep a close eye on their belongings, wrap up warm and consider using public transport if they go out on New Year’s Eve.

A police spokesman said more than 3,500 officers would help to prevent crime and disorder in the capital and “blue light havens” would give the public additional support outside police stations.

Chief Insp John Williams said: “We have seen some magnificent sporting achievements and this New Year’s Eve lots of people will be out to celebrate and welcome in the New Year.

“Officers will be out and about to deter criminals and keep crowds safe but we need you to do your bit to look after yourself and those around you as well.”
