THE lying ex-girlfriend of a contract killer behind the grisly murder of Dagenham man Charlie Butler has finally been jailed.

Caroline Lavender, 30, sobbed as she was caged for repeatedly telling fibs over the cold-blooded shooting of the 50-year-old outside his home in Green Lane, Dagenham, in 2004.

The 5,000 contract killing sparked a major police investigation reportedly costing 9million, with a prominent BBC Crimewatch appeal and two collapsed trials.

Lavender’s ex-boyfriend Douglas Johnson, 30, and accomplice David Austin, 43, were jailed for life with minimum sentences of 30 years on March 31.

Two months later Lavender received a one-year suspended sentence for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Lavender, of Stuart Road, Croydon, was brought before the Court of Appeal after the Attorney General ruled the sentence had been “unduly lenient”.

She was jailed yesterday for 18 months yesterday. Read more coverage in next week’s POST.
