A teenager who’s bike was stolen just hours after he brought it home has been given a new one.

Zayn Khan, 15, who lives in Upney Lane, Barking, was riding his new bike round Barking Park in August when he was beaten to the ground by three grown men.

Reading about his plight in The Post, Faruk Choudhury, Zayn’s councillor from Longbridge ward, started a crowdfunding page.

Within three days, donations had surpassed the £200 target, and the council were able to use £360 of donations to buy Zayn a replacement.

Last week, the bike – a black, 18 inch Carrera Parva – was presented to the Barking Abbey School student outside the town hall.

Councillor Choudhury said: “I am so pleased that we are able to get this young man back in the saddle and on the road. What happened to Zayn is not reflective of our borough and no one, young or old, should feel afraid to leave their home or be fearful of being robbed on our streets.”

Zayn’s father, Jawaid, said: “We appreciate all your generous contributions, the response to the fundraiser really was unbelievable and we can’t thank all of you enough.”
