THE A13 in Dagenham will become the first thoroughfare in the UK to get average speed cameras.

The accident blackspot plagued by 400 crashes a year is being fitted with 84 cameras that will monitor speed in real time as motorists drive between Canning town and the Goresbrook interchange.

Two people died and 37 were seriously injured in accidents along the stretch of road between 2007 and 2009.

Transport for London hopes the network of cameras recording speed over time could reduce smashes by up to 30 per cent. The cameras will be launched on January 31.
