An illegal cosmetic product used to lighten skin has landed a Barking beauty salon owner with a £10,000 fine and a three-month suspended sentence.
The product can cause skin irritation and, in severe cases, kidney and liver damage.
Augustin Koloko, 47, director of Koloko Cosmetics Ltd T/A Supreme White beauty salon in East Street, was found to be selling the banned product.
Products on sale at Koloko’s premises were found to contain 4.7% hydroquinone, a chemical used to lighten skin.
Products containing the substance are banned in the UK when not issued by a doctor.
Mr Koloko pleaded guilty to two acts of failing to act with due care and was found guilty at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on 18th August 2017.
Cllr Laila Butt, cabinet member for enforcement and community safety, said: “This prosecution once again sends out a clear message- cosmetic products that contain banned substances can be dangerous and can be extremely damaging.”
