Police appeal five years on from murder of Barking good Samaritan

The 31-year-old father of one was stabbed to death in Uphall Road, Barking, at the junction with Victoria Road on January 8, 2005 at about 6.40pm.

He was attacked after chasing two thieves who had mugged a woman’s bag and phone in nearby Loxford Road.

Although five men have been arrested in the years since the murder, they have all been released without charge and nobody has been convicted.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams, who heads the investigation for the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “What we can hope is, that in the years since Sukhwinder was killed, allegiances of those involved, or those who know who was involved and that have kept silent, may now have changed. And that those people re-examine their consciences and consider doing the right thing and help us by coming forward.”

CCTV released soon after the murder is believed to show the suspects, but none have been identified.

One robbery suspect was described as black, 5ft 10in-6ft tall, skinny with a young face and wearing a black hooded top and light grey jogging bottoms.

The second was thought to be a lighter-skinned black man, 6ft tall, of stocky build with possible facial markings or facial hair. He was wearing a light blue hooded top with markings on the sleeves.

The enquiries indicated that there may have been more than two suspects involved in the robbery and that one or more of the suspects may have still been in the area some 20 minutes after the murder.

Neither the stolen bag, believed to have been discarded in a garage area near Charlton Crescent, about a mile and a half from the murder scene, or its contents have never been recovered.
