Police will step up patrols this weekend across Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge amid rising violence and knife crime in the capital.
The Met is “encouraging” the use of stop and search with officers set to be deployed in town centres and “other key locations”.
“They will target known offenders and provide a visible reassurance presence to the community,” said a spokeswoman for Scotland Yard.
Weapon sweeps and curfew checks will also take place, she added.
The move follows news that the Met dealt with more killings than the New York Police Department in both February and March.
However, this situation may be seen as temporary, as London’s murder rate remains significantly lower than that of New York.
For every 100,000 inhabitants, 3.4 homicides took place in New York last year, compared to 1.2 in London.
