The teenager stabbed to death in Barking on Saturday evening has been named locally as 19-year-old Hasan Ozcan.
Hasan was attacked in Abbey Road, next to the Gascoigne Estate, just after 10pm on Saturday night.
A resident said that a group of youths came to the Gascoigne and chased a group of people, which included Hasan before he was stabbed.
He died at the scene 45 minutes later.
According to a childhood friend, who did not want to be named, Hasan was a well-liked member of the community.
“He was an ambitious individual with many aspirations,” she said.
“He was loved by his family and his girlfriend.”

Hasan had always wanted to “protect his family” and “keep them safe” from gang feuds which have blighted the area, which the friend said he had always distanced himself from.
A fundraising page has been set up to support the family and pay for a funeral.
Just over a month ago a 17-year-old suffered multiple stab wounds in Perryman House and last March David Adegbite, 18, died after being shot in the head on the estate.
A mother-of-two, who lives in a flat overlooking the crimescene and did not want to be named, said action must be taken to make the estate a safer place.
On the night of the murder she looked out of her window after initially hearing a disturbance, but could not see anything until the police arrived.
“We keep saying they need to install lights or lamps out there, because it’s so dark it’s dangerous,” she said.
“It is really frightening and you do worry about the safety of your children.”
Another resident reported: “That place [the murder scene] is so dark. It’s a safety issue.
“We tell the council to put lights in but they don’t listen. It’s very sad when things like this happen.”
A council spokesman said they have not recieved any complaints relating to poor lighting in the area and that plans are in place for LED replacements.
As the number of police patrols on the estate has gone down crime levels have significantly increased, said another resident.
