Trading standards have vowed to stop the illegal sale of fireworks as families gear up for Guy Fawkes Night.
The council officers warned yesterday they would visit retailers and enforce laws preventing the sale of fireworks to young people under the age of 18.
Cllr Jeanne Alexander, communities cabinet member for Barking and Dagenham, said: “Guy Fawkes Night is a great British tradition and many of us enjoy celebrating it every year but it is important to remember that fireworks are explosives and can be very dangerous in the wrong hands.
“This is why it is illegal to sell them to anyone under the age of 18. As with alcohol and cigarettes, retailers should ask for proof of age if they are in any doubt.”
Anyone concerned about the illegal sale of fireworks is urged to contact Barking and Dagenham Council on 020 8215 3007.
