A cross-borough partnership working towards devolution for the area has elected its chairman.

The Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, was selected to lead the Local London group.

It is made up of seven councils – Barking and Dagenham, Newham, Redbridge, Havering, Enfield, Waltham Forest and Greenwich – which have been working together across the past year on a range of issues.

They have come together across traditional party boundaries on policies including employment, skills and social care and have the ultimate vision of a devolution settlement for the sub-region.

Sir Robin said: “As a group, we have come a long way towards building shared understanding and establishing a common vision for the future.

“Across the seven boroughs there is agreement that a new settlement for our part of London is necessary.

“Only once this deal has been agreed can we collectively unlock the true potential of our boroughs.”

More than a quarter of London’s population growth over the next 14 years will come in the seven boroughs.

The next step for the partnership is to formalise the group by moving towards a joint committee arrangement and recruit a director to represent it.
