The government has 'named and shamed' two Dagenham businesses for not paying workers the minimum wage.

The names of nearly 240 UK employers who paid under £7.83 an hour to people aged over 25 was published on Friday.

These include Advance Apparel Ltd which failed to pay £2,634.34 to four employees between 2015 and 2017, with average arrears of £658.59 per worker.

Obedulla Mulla, 43, who runs the company in Thames Gateway Chequers Lane, told the Post it was a “first time mistake” relating to an apprenticeship scheme.

The company hired the workers as apprentices but was told they could only be taken on as “interns”, he said.

The taxman fined the business, which did not appeal, Mr Mulla added.

Dr Omran Abbas, who runs The Heathway Dental Surgery in Heathway, failed to pay £301.20 to one employee last year.

He failed to comment.
