An IT student has been crowned the winner of a regional competition after showing off his exceptional computer skills.

Wesley Smith, who is in the second year of a BTEC level 3 diploma in IT at Barking and Dagenham College, won the Microsoft IT Technician category at Worldskills UK.

The competition, which was held at North East Surrey College of Technology, Ewell, saw the 19-year-old compete in a four-hour programme of competitions and practical assessments, including fixing up a computer from scratch and configuring a domain name service.

Wesley, from Dagenham, said: “I was so shocked to have won.

“This was my first time competing at Worldskills and I was against students who had been there two or three times before so I was very surprised but obviously happy to have won.”

His tutor Paul Wilson said: “It was a highly intense competition so we were over the moon when we heard Wesley being announced as the winner.

“He worked very hard right up to the last minute. Wesley did all at Barking and Dagenham College proud.”

Barking and Dagenham College IT students Daniel Barker and Osvaldas Kasciukaitis were joint third place in the CISCO IT Technician category.
