A newspaper delivery driver has avoided jail after stealing nearly £200,000 from the taxpayer.

Veselin Makaveev, 43, was sentenced last Friday to 14 months in jail, suspended for two years, for VAT fraud amounting to £193,000.

The Bosworth Road, Dagenham, resident pleaded guilty last November for failure to disclose that his business, VIM Transport, had a turnover of £540,000.

He was caught after a routine visit by HM Revenue and Customs to one of his customers.

At the sentencing at Snaresbrook Crown Court Makaveev was ordered to pay £1,500 costs and £100 surcharge.
