Dagenham duo’s designs reach fashion final

Two Dagenham fashionistas fought off international contenders to become finalists in a prestigious design competition.

Jiya Davé, 27, and Philomena Sarpong, 29, are in the running to be crowned The Liberty Fashion Designer of the year 2015 and stand a chance of winning £1k to help kick start their own business.

To secure their slot in the final of Liberate Your Style they designed a garment which reflected their taste.

Along with 21 hopefuls they will showcase their masterpieces on the runway at The Liberty Catwalk Show on Friday, May 29.

Jiya, a fashion design student about to begin her first year at Bournemouth University, designed a simple, chic monochrome skirt and cropped top inspired by Coco Chanel.

Philomena, a design student from Barking and Dagenham College, was inspired by the V&A Museum’s Fashion Gallery and used ferns and feathers as embellishment on a glamorous evening dress.

The competition received a record number of entries with designs flooding in from as far a field as Japan, America and Nigeria.

The competition was run by The Liberty Shopping Centre in Romford and the high street store, Marks & Spencers.
