Dagenham & Redbridge’s search for a first win at Victoria Road this season goes on following a goalless draw with bottom-club Newport County.

The first half was extremely short on chances but Daggers did go close on several occassions following the interval.

Poor finishing from the club’s top scorer last year didn’t help matters but one slight positive was Dagenham recording their first league shutout of the campaign.

Again, some players placed doubts over their place in the starting XI with their display, including the skipper.

Liam O’Brien (7) - After sleep-inducing first half, did well to stay alert and made some good saves after break, including tipping Zak Ansah’s effort over bar. Clean sheet will boost confidence.

Josh Passley (7) - Brilliant tracking back to prevent Aaron Collins from opening scoring. Starting to look old head despite young age.

Nyron Nosworthy (6.5) - Kept Collins at bay for majority of game and distribution from back definitely improving.

Ayo Obileye (6) - Gifted Lenell John-Lewis chance to open scoring which striker thankfully missed but not too much wrong apart from that.

Joe Widdowson (6.5) - Rarely troubled by two fromer Daggers in Medy Elito and Nana Ofori-Twumasi and better than last week in Carlisle.

Zavon Hines (6.5) - Delighted to see winger make first start for 19 months and could have capped it remarkably well with early goal. Could prove key player to team’s hopes this year.

Andre Boucaud (5) - Another abject performance. Still to be convinced he’s captain material. Time to give Niko Hamalainen a shot? Can’t be any worse on current form.

Kane Ferdinand (6.5) - Currently having to do job of two in middle of park. Does stuff that goes unnoticed but is crucial to helping team defensively.

Ashley Hemmings (6) - First half offered little creatively but pushed on second half and delivered some lovely crosses.

Christian Doidge (6.5) - Surprised he made way at half time, was giving centre back Danny Holmes all kinds of trouble. Not enough width first half, which strangely came when he went off.

Matt McClure (6) - A fox in box type of player, so if the ball isn’t getting into opposition area, chances are he’s not scoring. Jamie Cureton’s arrival meant summer signing had to drop deeper, which didn’t help.

Substitutes:

Jamie Cureton for Doidge 46 (5.5) - On another day, would have had a hat trick but finishing was dreadful. Possibly could be down to lack of game time in recent weeks but didn’t do hopes of recall any favours.

Jodi Jones for Hines 70 (7) - Injected some much need impetus into attack and delivery of final balls was best I’ve seen. A menace down the flanks again, should start against Barnet.
