Scouts will be transforming their crumbling headquarters after scooping a £10,000 grant.

Broken and boarded-up windows will be replaced at the Columbus Bellahoj explorer scout unit’s venue in Dagenham after explorers applied for and won runner-up in the Building Futures competition on Friday.

Renovation plans for the venue at St Cedd’s Church in Lodge Avenue also include a new kitchen, toilets, and provision of disabled access.

Richard Catchpole, district explorer scout leader, said: “We are completely overwhelmed by the young people in our explorer section for entering the competition and winning this much needed grant.

“We will now be able to start the much-needed work on our headquarters, and make it a safer place for our explorers and district to use for years to come.”

The competition was a collaboration between the Shanly Foundation – the charitable arm of the South East based developer, the Shanly Group – and the UK Scout Association.
