DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE have lost out on Wealdstone defender Carl Martin after he signed for League Two rivals Crewe Alexandra.

Martin trained with the Daggers on Monday and was due to play in a reserve team match against Millwall today, but has now opted to move to Gresty Road on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The right back was on trial at Crewe in pre-season but then manager Gudjon Thordarson decided against signing him.

Thordarson has since been replaced at the helm, with Dario Gradi taking the reins once more, and his first move was to bring Martin back to the club.

"Carl is a player I didn't know much about in the summer," Gradi told the Crewe official website.

"I saw him around the place, but we always had trialists at the training ground. On one of his final days with us, he came to train with the scholars and was very impressive.

"He was athletic and quick, but I didn't see him again because I thought Gudjon wasn't going to sign him.

"When I was re-appointed, I asked what had happened to him and found out that he hadn't signed for Dagenham where he was on trial.

"I said we would be interested in him again and he is up today having a medical.

"He is a right back, who can play centre half and he will join up with the first team squad as he is one for the future."
