Dagenham & Redbridge won on their last trip to Cambridge and they’ll want another successful trip back down the M11

Dagenham & Redbridge return to the site of their first victory this season on Saturday when they visit Cambridge United in League Two.

The east Londoners won on their previous trip to the Abbey Stadium back in September when Ashley Hemmings and Matt McClure both struck in the first half of a 2-0 win in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

It was a result that remains Dagenham’s only win to date in their new home kit that features the new club badge with the daggers pointing down, something which implies the fight is over.

When Victoria Road played host the U’s on Boxing Day, Daggers were on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline with a certain John Still watching from the stands.

Still already has one victory away to Cambridge this season, masterminding a 3-1 success for Luton Town back in September — coincidentally on the same day Daggers recorded their first league win of the season.

And if he is hoping for another successful journey to Cambridgeshire, then Still will be looking for Hemmings to return to his menacing best.

In that JPT triumph, Hemmings was a pest from start to finish, whipping tempting ball after tempting ball into the box for the striker’s to attack.

The winger also opened the scoring too with a thunderous drive into the roof of the net, and while it may be difficult to have as good an impact if he plays as a wingback, Daggers will need another good display from Hemmings.

Another thing they could do with is the return of McClure who grabbed the second strike in that cup win, somewhat fortuitously diverting Kane Ferdinand’s low drive into the box.

Starting from the off may be a stretch too far for the striker as he nears a return from an injury that has kept him out since November, but he could well appear from the bench.

In the early portion of the season, Doidge and McClure looked to be a potent front pairing in the making for Daggers with the Welshman’s strength and the former Wycombe man’s pace troubling defences.

And if they have the chance to recreate it on Saturday, then Daggers may well get that elusive second win in their new home kit.
