A BUILDER who killed himself told his partner the day before he died that he planned to "leave this world", an inquest heard.
Arjun Verma was found hanging in their home in Shirley Gardens, Barking on August 24 last year.
The 50-year-old had become increasingly depressed during the previous months as he struggled to come to terms with the fact his partner wanted to end their two-year relationship.
At Walthamstow Crown Court last week the partner said Mr Verma had threatened to kill himself on a number of occasions.
When she phoned him on the evening of August 23 he told her: "You want me to leave you but I'm going to leave this world".
The woman was so convinced Mr Verma would commit suicide that she asked police to go to the house to check up on him.
Two officers went to the property at around 9pm. Mr Verma told the men he had no intention of killing himself.
PC Shane Richards, of Barking Police, told the coroner: "He seemed calm and collected and said his partner must have misunderstood him."
PC Richards and his colleague then walked around the house to see if there were any signs that Mr Verma might harm himself.
Satisfied he wasn't in danger, they left.
The next day his partner decided to go herself. Opening the front door she noticed Mr Verma's body almost immediately.
A number of suicide letters were discovered in the house and police could find no evidence suggesting he was murdered or helped to die.
A post mortem confirmed Mr Verma had not been drinking before his death.
Coroner Dr Elizabeth Stearns recorded that Mr Verma, who was born in India, killed himself.
