A car driver was injured in a police chase when his vehicle smashed into traffic lights in Dagenham last night.

Officers had stopped to assist a vehicle which had appeared to have broken down in Dagenham Road at around 7.20pm.

But the driver made off from police as the officers approached, Scotland Yard said tonight.

The vehicle was driven the wrong way along Dagenham Road towards the junction with Rush Green Road when it hit the traffic lights, police confirmed.

The driver of the Volvo involved has suspected head injuries and was taken to hospital in east London, but his condition was not serious.

Police cordoned off the junction while investigations got under way.

The driver was also arrested “on suspicion of drink driving”, the Met’s East Area Crime Command revealed, while the Volvo with its offside bashed in was towed away and the junction reopened.

The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed of the incident as a matter of course.
