Winter may be coming, but the race to name a gritter is hotting up.

The Great Gritsby and Eddie Blizzard are among the mad monikers shortlisted for one of the Barking and Dagenham Council’s three new machines.

Anyone can vote for the favourite names on social media, with pairs of the top 24 titles battling for votes in a series of heats.

Following inspired names like David Plowie and Usain Salt in past years, residents were asked for their suggestions earlier this month and submissions whittled down to a shortlist.

The favourite two names will be branded onto the gritters, with the remaining vehicle dubbed from suggestions sent in from the borough’s school children.

Winners will be invited to an official naming ceremony where they’ll also collect their prize — a family ticket to the Belowzero Ice Bar in Mayfair.

You can vote for your favourite name on the council’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
