The University of East London will be marking the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth with a mile-long walk through the Royal Docks.
The ‘Mandela mile’ is being held as part of a global celebration of the life and achievements of the former South African president, who died in 2013 aged 95.
The walk, on Wednesday, July 18, also coincides with the university’s first day of graduation ceremonies and as such, will see staff and students take part in their gowns and mortar boards.
They will be joined by South Africa’s deputy high commissioner, Golden Neswiswi, with anyone else that wants to join in invited to do so.
The UEL chair of governors, Geoff Thompson, said: “Like Mandela, we are dedicated to widening access to higher education and transforming the lives of our students, and so it is only fitting that we honour his enduring legacy by walking in his honour.”
The walk will start at 9am at the Prince Regent station entrance of the ExCeL.
