Young people studying in from Barking and Dagenham were given Jack Petchey Achievement Awards last night in recognition of their extra-curricular achievements, dedication and acts of bravery or kindness.
The 99 prize winners received medals and a £250 grant for school equipment or an educational project at the ceremony held at Broadway Theatre last week.
The awards are given to 11 to 25-year-olds in nearly 2,000 schools in London and Essex as part of the Jack Petchey Foundation which has invested £100million in the scheme.
Sir Jack Petchey CBE, 92, founder of the foundation, said: “I am passionate about our awards scheme which enables young people to be recognised, valued and rewarded for their achievements and positive contributions to society.”
Anne Bristow, strategic director of Barking and Dagenham Council’s service development and integration department, who presented some of the awards, said: “It was an honour to give out the awards and amazing to see so many young people who have achieved so much themselves and for others.”
Barking and Dagenham Post editor Lorraine King, who also presented awards on the night, added: “I think it’s wonderful that talented young people are rewarded in this way.”
