Parents, pupils and staff soaked up the sun at Gascoigne Primary School in Barking on Saturday, with Bollywood dancing, poetry readings and karate sessions.

Organised by the Dagenham Road school’s newly formed family liaison practitioner team, about 2,000 people attended the event which helped raise money for the school.

“It was an absolute success and exceeded everyone’s expectations,” said team member and former school nursery nurse Kelly McKinnon, 46. “It couldn’t have gone any better.

“People talk about racism but the day just shows that people do come together from all different backgrounds which was brilliant.”

The event was the first organised by the team, but plans are already in place for the next one.

“We’re also hoping to organise a Christmas fête,” added Kelly. “It’s a great way of getting people involved.”
