Move over, Mary Berry! Pupils and staff at Gascoigne Primary School have been getting in the baking spirit, creating their own cakes to raise money for a good cause.

The Gascoigne Road, Barking school held a coffee afternoon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Research, with pupils creating their own posters for the event and making and decorating cakes to sell.

One of the school’s kitchen staff then judged their efforts, with two classes - Roxo Class and Rainbow Room - being named as joint winners.

Crystal Dariah, who made a cake at home with her mum, was also praised for her baking and won a £20 voucher donated by Asda.

Family liaison practitioner Kelly McKinnon, who helped organise the event, said she was “delighted by the way the whole school community came together”.

Thursday’s event raised more than £350 for Macmillan, with the unsold cakes donated to Barking foodbank.
