Staff at Thames View Junior School in Barking couldn’t choose between raising money for the British Heart Foundation and Great Ormond Street Hospital so decided to help both.

Year five teacher William Ashton agreed to have his head shaved during assembly by the class which had raised the most money.

And Sukh Toot, who teaches the winning year six class Silver Birch, said she would match the amount they had raised.

Sara Ryder, headteacher of the Bastable Avenue school, said: “He [William] has a few cuts to his head as the children were very enthusiastic.”

About £525 was raised in total which will be split equally between the two charities.

The school assembly also included the final of the dancing championship competition.

Year three class Oak were crowned winners.
