Jo Richardson Community School in Gale Street has been shortlisted in the Pearson Teaching Awards, which were set up 20 years ago to recognise outstanding teachers and schools.

The award is given to schools which are thought to bring “cohesion and enrichment” to the community and which transform the lives of pupils.

Headteacher Ges Smith said: “We always had a commitment to ‘success for all’ and this nomination recognises the high level of aspiration we have for all our students.”

Councillor Evelyn Carpenter, cabinet member for education, said: “Barking and Dagenham is consistently demonstrating that it is a place where young people can get the best start to their educational life.

“The young thinkers of today are our tomorrow, so it is important our schools give youngsters every opportunity to be the best versions of themselves.”

The award winners will be announced later this year in a televised ceremony.
