The first cohort of GCSE pupils at Riverside School performed well above average, new figures have revealed.

Department for Education statistics show that the school, in Barking Riverside, recorded the highest progress 8 score in the borough based on 2017 GCSE results.

The measure, introduced in 2016, shows how much progress pupils at a school made in eight subjects between the end of Key Stage 2 and the end of Key Stage 4, compared to their counterparts who got similar results at the end of Key Stage 2.

Progress 8 scores are centred around 0, with most schools within the range of -1 to +1. The data shows how many schools have missed the government’s floor standard of -0.5.

Riverside also saw topped the leaderboard for the attainment 8 score - how well pupils achieved in eight key subjects - and the proportion achieving the EBacc - a grade 5 or C or above in English, maths, science, a language and either geography or history - with 52pc.

Jo Richardson Community School, All Saints Catholic School, The Sydney Russell School and Barking Abbey School all recorded above average progress 8 scores.

All Saints, in Wood Lane, Dagenham, had the highest proportion of pupils achieving a grade 5 or above in English and maths, with 58pc.

Riverside was second with 53pc, with Barking Abbey and Eastbury Community School not far behind with 49pc and 48pc respectively.

School standards minister Nick Gibb said: “Academic standards are rising in our schools thanks to our reforms and the hard work of teachers, with 1.9million more children in good or outstanding schools than in 2010.

“The results reinforce this success, with teachers and pupils responding well to the new more rigorous curriculum introduced by this government.”

He added: “We will continue to use this evidence to drive up standards even further for all pupils so that they leave school prepared for future success in their education and beyond, helping to build a Britain that is fit for the future.”
