Barking and Dagenham’s best GCSE students were recognised at an awards ceremony.
The Colin Pond Trust Scholarship Awards gives the top 50 students in the borough a £500 prize for their results.
On Wednesday, students from 11 schools were recognised at the awards, which are in their second year.
Councillor Evelyn Carpenter, cabinet member for education, said: “The young people worked extremely hard for their GCSEs. Many congratulations to them for their brilliant results. I am glad that the Colin Pond Trust is able to support them to continue their studies.”
Almost two thirds of the borough’s pupils achieved passes in English and maths, while a fifth gained grades 9 to 7 (equivalent to A and A*s) in English.
The awards are named after Colin Pond, a former Barking and Dagenham councillor, who left money in a trust before his death in 2001 to fund the education of young people in the borough.
