Philanthropic law students have been rewarded with training from top barristers.

Fledgling legal eagles from Barking and Dagenham College, in Dagenham Road, set up a clinic providing free legal advice when they realised there wasn’t a Citizens Advice Bureau in the area.

On Thursday, the volunteers, who are all mature students hoping to go on to university, had the chance to train with six high-flying lawyers, including Simon Cheetham, a barrister at Old Square Chambers.

Mr Cheetham said it was a “great privilege” to meet the Access to Law students and praised the group’s unfailing “enthusiasm and commitment”. “They will be contributing to a much-needed resource within the community, at a time when public funding for assistance with legal disputes is disappearing,” he added.

The community legal clinic at the Rush Green college takes place on Wednesdays during term time, 9am to noon.
