Nearly 50 fines in five days issued for litter bugs in Barking

Barking and Dagenham Council have fined 45 people in just five days for littering.
As part of a planned operation to tidy up Barking town centre, enforcement officers have been clamping down on litterers.
Those caught in the act were given an on the spot fine of £75, which they have 14 days to pay. If they don’t settle the fine in time, it could go up to £2,500.
Councillor Margaret Mullane, cabinet member for enforcement, said: “It isn’t rocket science. When you’ve finished with your rubbish, chuck it in the bin. “Children understand this but sadly some of these litter louts seem to think the law doesn’t apply to them.”
The council have given 306 fixed penalty notices for litterers so far in 2018.
Councillor Mullane added: “As a result of their ignorance, they have learnt an expensive lesson and will hopefully think twice before throwing any rubbish on the streets again.”
