What do one of Barking’s most famous footballing sons, a fictional wizard and a mean grandparent have in common?

They’re the names chosen to be given to Barking and Dagenham Council’s three new gritters.

Yes, that’s right - Bobby Moore Grit, Albus Dumblethaw and The Grounding Granny will be travelling the borough’s streets this winter, making the roads safer in the icy weather.

Two of the names were among those submitted by more than 150 people and put to a public vote, with the third being chosen by a panel of judges from suggestions sent in by schools.

One of the winners, who put forward the Harry Potter-inspired moniker, said that “knowing a gritter lorry will be driving around the streets called Albus Dumblethaw is a very nice prize”.

In addition to seeing their names added to the gritting machines, the three winners have also bagged a family ticket to London’s Belowzero Ice Bar.
