Police unveil plans for a crackdown on cruisers

Illegal race meetings will be dealt a blow by new police powers.

Officers have new powers to disperse groups meeting to race cars along streets outside Lakeside shopping centre, which has been dubbed the “Lakeside GP,” and which attract so-called “cruisers” from across east London boroughs including Barking and Dagenham.

The dispersal order has been granted for six months from June 1 and will allow officers from Essex Police to prevent anti-social behaviour in the area.

A police spokesperson explained: “We know that people come from all over east London as well as from Essex to take part in these races.

“What we are trying to do is stop those who are putting other people in danger by using the area as a race track.”
