Cllr Nirmal Gill died unexpectedly on Monday, February 25, leaving behind wife Mohinder, daughter Bindy and son and deputy leader of the council, Rocky.

During his first mayoral term, Cllr Gill set new records for the amount of money he raised for his chosen charity, Help For Heroes, earning £29,400 for the charity in just one year.

Visiting Chavasse VC House Recovery Centre, Colchester, on Saturday, August 3, Rocky Gill said: “I was humbled by the visit which offered us the opportunity to witness firsthand the wonderful work being done by this much loved charity.

“As a family we are proud to say my father’s legacy lives on in the hope and support his fundraising efforts have brought to those who have served their country in very demanding circumstances.”

All money raised by the late councillor, who died aged 65, went to the recovery centre which provides accommodation, a state of the art fitness centre and ongoing support for military personnel wounded in current conflicts.

Following his death, Cllr Gill’s family requested money was donated to the charity in place of flowers and more than £1,000 was raised as a result.
