Firefighters tackled a blaze at a paper recycling warehouse in River Road.
Four fire engines attended the scene after the brigade was called at 3.50pm.
Part of the single storey building was damaged by thick smoke and a waste paper baling machine was destroyed.
Nobody was injured in the fire, which took crews wearing breathing apparatus until 6.20pm to get under control.
The 21 firefighters from Barking, Stratford and Deptford stations spent several hours dampening down deep-seated pockets of fire in the warehouse.
The cause is currently under investigation.
