Police believe a flat fire that left more than one third of the property badly damaged was started deliberately.

Crews from two fire engines battled to extinguish the fire at a flat in Maxey Road, Dagenham, at around 9.15pm yesterday.

A 36-year-old woman was taken to King Georges Hospital, Romford, believed to be suffering from smoke inhalation.

Some 35 per cent of the ground-floor flat was damaged in the blaze, including most of the living room and some of the kitchen.
