The roof of a block of flats in Forest Gate collapsed last night after a fire broke out in the building.

Five fire engines and 35 firefighters were called to Dames Road just before 11pm last night.

The flames damaged the inside of a one bedroom flat inside the building as well as the roof,

Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by 1.30am.

Two women escaped the building before emergency services arrived and one of them was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Ten people evacuated the building next door.

Fire crews from Stratford, Leyton, East Ham, Ilford and Kentish Town fire stations attended the scene.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “Part of a one bedroom flat on the second floor was damaged by fire. The fire also affected the roof and led to it partially collapsing onto the second floor.”

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
