WEST HAM began their preparations for this Saturday's trip to Chelsea, with a behind-closed-doors friendly at Upton Park on Monday.

It was a chance for some of the fringe players to improve their fitness, and despite a 2-0 defeat to MLS team San Jose Earthquakes, it was a worthwhile exercise.

Danny Gabbidon played 67 minutes as he continues his recovery from the hamstring injury that has blighted his season.

Kieron Dyer, who played most of the second half against Bolton, got in another 65 minutes, while there were also outings for Manuel Da Costa, Fabio Daprela and new signings Ilan and Mido.

Irish striker Terry Dixon also played the last 25 minutes as West Ham rang the changes in the second half, but it was not enough to grab a goal.

West Ham: Kurucz, N'Gala, Da Costa (Moncur 68), Gabbidon (Sanchez 67), Daprela (Zola 68), Dyer (Dixon 65), Spence, Payne, Edgar, Ilan (Lee 46), Mido (Brookes 74).
